about
It's true that too much of a good thing is bad. But it's also true that not enough of it can suck the joy out of life. With its toe-tapping snare and breakneck groove, the title track from David Myles' forthcoming record Devil Talking takes this to heart. Through jazzy, hypnotic rock 'n' soul, Myles makes the case for ignoring the angel on your shoulder now and then, and opting instead to indulge their pitchfork-wielding neighbour.
"I come alive on the weekend, like I’ve been saved," Myles sings on a chorus alongside Reeny Smith's rousing background vocals. "I was as tight as a deacon; nearly ended in my grave."
Myles and the band work overtime to create the song's sweltering vibe—Dean Drouillard's head-nodding bass; the supernatural air of Asa Brosius' pedal steel; Leith Fleming-Smith's fiery organ work, too hot for church; and of course, Joshua Van Tassel's hip-swivelling percussion. Myles' delivery is dusky and devil-may-care, bringing the whole show to a scorching release at the finale.
"Being too tight doesn’t work for me," Myles says. "I love letting off a little steam and having a good time on the weekends; it's often when I feel the most alive. But I'm also well aware of the shortcomings of doing that too much. Why are the things that can ultimately harm me so irresistible? Is this the Devil talking? 'Cause it sure feels good."
"Devil Talking" celebrates gettin' loose and reminds us that puritanism works for nobody. As the old adage goes: "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."
lyrics
I come alive on the weekend
And I don’t mind
I was as tight as a deacon
Til I stopped trying
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
I took my bike on the freeway
But not to make a point
I used to keep up with the Joneses
Til I stopped to roll a joint
Hey, hey, hey
Is this the devil talking
Is this the devil talking
Is this the devil talking
Cause it sure feels good
Is this the devil talking
Is this the devil talking
Is this the devil talking
Cause it sure feels good
Good to be rolling
Good to be reeling
I try to hold on to this feeling
But it keeps slipping away
I come alive on the weekend
Live I’ve been saved
I was as tight as a deacon
Nearly ended in my grave
Hey, hey, hey
Is this the devil talking
Is this the devil talking
Is this the devil talking
Cause it sure feels good
Is this the devil talking
Is this the devil talking
Is this the devil talking
Cause it sure feels good
Is this the devil talking
Is this the devil talking
Is this the devil talking
Cause it sure feels good
Is this the devil talking
Is this the devil talking
Is this the devil talking
Cause it sure feels good
